Sweet 16 Birthday Party Idea For This Current Economy
Turning 16 years old was once an occasion that marked a child’s coming of age. This meant that girls were old enough to get married and start a family; boys were regarded as men. In the USA, Sweet 16 is similar to a 15 year old girl’s Quincinera in latin cultures or a Bat Mtizvah / Bar Mitzvah in the Jewish religion. The ages vary a bit between the 3 traditions, though all are cause for celebration of maturity depending on the culture. Teens look forward to making it an extra special occasion.
Is Sweet 16 regarded the same these days?
Kids in the USA do still look forward to turning 16, but they are more concerned with being able to drive a car, work a job and permission to date than earning more lifelong responsibilities. This is because we do not consider them adults until they become 18 years old, therefore this “coming of age” is more a milestone towards preparing towards their future (graduating High School, going to college and / or moving out on their own); still, for obvious reasons, 21 is the age that teens look forward to these days. Regardless, they still want to celebrate their 16th birthday with friends and family – just like they see on MTVs My Super Sweet 16, though this economy does not always permit for a formal occasion none the less a celebrity style bash; it just depends on the youth’s expectations and the family’s budget for a Sweet 16 party.
Is “Sweet 16” still looked upon as the special occasion that it used to be?
Traditionally, a Sweet 16 birthday party is a formal occasion announced by invitations to friends and family. Parents buy a Sweet 16 dress (party dress) or suit for a boy (tuxedo), Sweet 16 cake, limousine and entertainment venue to host a huge party in celebration of their child’s 16th birthday. In recent years, some Sweet 16 parties have become less formal; of course the economy has not helped. Can families in the United States afford to have Sweet 16 birthday parties? Should shows like My Super Sweet 16 not create the illusion that a special party is in order?

According to the teens on MTVs “My Super Sweet 16” show, turning 16 is still a “coming out” celebration that should be remembered and they expect their parents to host. What we like about it is that this show is that it features both boys and girls turning sweet 16, but how realistic is it for the average teen? These are wealthy kids that are not affected by the economy as most families are in the United States.
So, how can the average family make an extra special Sweet 16 for a child that expects a unique bash in this economy?
